Legislative Update

Since my last Ebrief article so much has happened in the political world.

The recounts are over and we now know Ron DeSantis is our Governor and Rick Scott our US Senator. Governor Scott beat three term US Senator Bill Nelson by 10,003 votes. Closer to home we know Elizabeth Fetterhoff, former aide to Sen Dorothy Hukill won her election and survived the recount against incumbent Patrick Henry by 72 votes. It truly was a election cycle where every vote mattered.

On November 20th, both Chambers met and officially elected their Speaker, Jose Oliva – R, Miami , and their Senate President, Bill Galvano- R, Bradenton. The House has announced some of their key leaders and committee Chairman. Rep MaryLynn Magar- R, Hobe Sound is the Speaker Pro Tempore and Sen David Simmons – R, Orlando is the President Pro Tempore. It is interesting to note that the Majority Leaders in both Houses are from SW Florida. Rep Dane Eagle – R, Cape Coral and Sen Kathleen Passidomo- R, Naples. The Appropriations Chairs are both from N Florida, Jacksonville area, Rep Travis Cummings- R, Orange Park and Sen Rob Bradley- R, Orange Park.

Both Houses retained their Republican majorities. The Senate 23-17 and the House 73-47.

The Senate has released all their committee memberships and it is important to note they have consolidated and condensed many committees. The House has yet to release their committee assignments but hopefully that will be known before the first round of committee meetings are held the week of December 11th.

On a personal note, I managed to fracture my back while riding horses over the Veterans Day weekend. I was jumping and came off my horse landed on my feet and torqued and fell hard on my side.

I have an anterior L2 wedge compression fracture with mild spinal canal narrowing. Disc bulge between L5 and S1.

I am fine, no surgery needed, and not much pain. I am wearing a lovely body brace affectionately referred to as my “turtle shell”.

I want to thank all the wonderful radiologists who have especially helped me with my care, you know who you are! I really was not planning to have such a first-hand knowledge of the important work you all do!! Special thanks go to Dr. Charles Williams for coming to the hospital on Sunday and helping me and my family more than I can ever articulate.

I hope everyone has a healthy and safe holiday season.

I personally am counting my blessings,

All my best,
Alison Dudley, FRS Lobbyist
